If you are looking for a puppy to buy, PLEASE, buy from a reputable breeder. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy a puppy from “back yard breeders, pet stores or a puppy mills.

DID YOU KNOW? That 70% of dogs that end up at the local pounds were originally purchased from pet shops and “back yard breeders”? That’s what local city dog officer has for statistics. These are very sad numbers. And why, you ask.

These people have no idea what goes into producing a fine, healthy, sound temperamented specimen typical of the breed. They have no more intention of standing behind this puppy than does the pet store beyond the usual 48 hour health guarantee. And worse yet, they don’t really care. They don’t care about what is best for the breed. They don’t care if you have problems. All that matters is your money.

Although you might pay less for the breed of your choice from a pet store or backyard breeder, it's almost a given that in the long run, you'll pay a good deal more in vet bills and perhaps emotional bills (if the dog has to be euthanized due to a health or temperament problem), than you would from a reputable breeder.

* A reputable breeder is a person who is breeding to "improve and preserve" the breed.
* A reputable breeder will sell their puppies with a health guarantee and a sales contract.
* A reputable breeder does health screening and testing.
* A reputable breeder will try to assure that this is indeed, the right breed for you, your family and your lifestyle.

NOTE:
No breeder can guarantee against all hereditary diseases, but a reputable breeder is well informed about their breeds health issues, routinely tests for them, and informs prospective puppy buyers of any problems they have found.

Should I Breed My Cocker?
In today’s world we have an overpopulation of dogs. Breeding just to have a litter is not recommended. For the majority of pet owners, spaying your female is to be preferred. This operation will also lessen the risk in later life of mammary tumors and other reproductive problems. The male may also benefit from being neutered and this procedure will cool his desire for any neighborhood female in heat. Please check with your veterinarian for when and how these procedures should be done.
